This whole event that transpired in Sept of 1965 was just the icing on the cake of UFO sightings that fall. As it was the most notable sighting and most thorough researched of cases it surely was not the incident that triggered the military and it surely was not the one incident that the military at PEASE AFB was trying to hide up! There were many.
I was an investigator for APRO and also for a small group that was out of VA. There were so many cases that I could not do them all. The police in Newburyport and Amesbury( a small town about 15 miles away from Exeter had so many cases that the police had me going out every night 7 nights a week. The cases were endless.!
UFOS hovering over fields, UFOS flying up and down the Merrimac river. Also the Naval base in Portsmouth , NH.The AFB annd the Naval Base are about 5-6 miles away from each other. Is that a coincidence? I think not. What was happening as Ray Fowler points out in his book and as other have also was the massive amount of sightings that occurred in such a short time. There were Ufos hovering 5 feet off of the highways that led into and out of Major highways. On RT 101 that leads East and West of the NH seacoast and goes West into the middle of the state one women actually took the ramp to get on it and almost hit a ufo as she went up the ramp and turned to go west, she had to slam on the brakes and it rose up and took off.
Ufo investigators who said they were there, were not! How do I know? I was. These sightings were a blue print of what our own space program endorsed, who knew that?
Our space program endorsed, observing, intel and mapping major travel lanes of ETS, if we encounter them but do not engage the civilizations as it might cause panic. It seems that we, learned from them how to map a unkown society and learn their ways but not to engage them if at all possible. The ufos have been in a close proximity to the Mass NH border since the 1950s. Exeter was just another spot on a map.
Now if you want to do it right........there is a way. Almost all ufo investigators have a map of the area on their wall. Push pins of difent colors indicate different sightings, Blue for flyover day time, low light, or black at night or green for landings or brown for beaches etc. As the sightings heat up you dsee a definite pattern. One who does this can almost see the intelligent pattern of these enigmatic flying objects.
This was no mystery. As the sightings tend to pile up in one particular area you start to realize that a major UFO sighting is going to happen.
Of course you hear of stars that twinkle, but at 25 feet above the ground with a hill in back of them? Come on.
Then you get the Piper cubs that fly in and out of local airports but when you go to these facilities no one flew on those nights but the local media accuse these small aircraft of doing weird things that they can not do. Stopping in mid air and heading back wards with out turning.
Ray Fowler and John Fuller were very apt in their handling of these cases. John Fullers book, Incident at Exeter, were compelling in there factual accounts surrounding the multifaceted sightings in this period of time.
I am sure that if the Police were not there and did not see the "light" and actually shoot at it, then this would go in the back burners of ufology. But it did not. Thank GOD for that. So what to make of the , INCIDENT AT EXETER?
It was milestone in the archives of UFOLOGY!!! But it was the icing on the cake of ufo research. But after you look at the ingredients of the cake you put the icing on the cake. It is the frosting that you lok at first but the inside of the cake is what holds the frosting up. Like all UFO research, the icing is the most glamourous but the heart of the matter is what holds the top up. The inside of this story is what holds the most evidence of a massive flap and of the most compelling incident that ever occured!! That is the the story behind the story.
